ST2132 review (NUS)

DISCLAIMER: firstly, i am not a professional writer, so if there are mistakes in my language, move on. secondly, the review is mostly based on opinions, so i would advise you to google for more reviews to get a diverse take on the modules you are interested in. thirdly, module details change every semester, so do not expect every assessment will stick. last but not the least, i will not talk about grades. hope this is useful for you, cheers.

ST2132: Mathematical Statistics

what do you learn?
this module is more of the final module that is really content heavy and that is really loaded with theoretical statistics. to me, this module is sort of a build up on ST1131 and ST2131. this is a compulsory module for numerous majors. by far, this is the heaviest content statistical module because even higher level statistical modules emphasise more on few concepts and topics but this module is like a giant net. its contents include method of moments, maximum likelihood and many other topics.

how are you being graded?
like most of the mathematics and statistics module, the grade for the module relies heavily on exams. in this case, midterms and finals will give you your overall grade.

my take on this module?
the first half of this module, in other words those covered prior to midterms, is repetitive of other statistical modules. you learn the various distributions and probabilities. pretty straightforward, hence the slightly easy midterms. those after that are new and rather complex at first glance. the final paper was rather challenging. well, assessments aside, the things you learn in this module is really useful and need in future statistical modules. tutorials can be challenging as well, if you intend to try during the course of the semester.. lol.

advices?
practise the tutorial questions and past year papers in preparation for the exams. by now one should already know that there isn’t many shortcuts in such modules.. one has to be exposed to various questions and try to ensure you are understanding the concepts taught in the module. for the semester when i took this module, the final paper was both challenging and lengthy but fret not.. just doing at your quick but cautious pace and be careful with calculations. don’t worry about finishing the paper or having to skip some parts/questions. last minute cramming of knowledge is not advisable considering the amount of content this module has.
