senior

yes this is an update of my life.

let's talk work first. been really busy catching up with work ever since the midterms are over. it is a habit of mine i guess. anything taught during the midterms week won't be absorbed by the brain. as such, i will have to catch up say about a week and a half of work after all my papers. got one of the results back already.. rather disappoint but no point crying over spilled milk anyway. moving on now. three projects due this coming week.

doing projects with friends has its pros and cons i guess. good thing include, being able to communicate easily and well, ever ready to help one another, honest opinions received. bad thing will probably be knowing a new bad habit when it comes to group work.. some can't work well in groups i guess. nonetheless, as i said, good thing we are all friends.. we accommodate. projects one side.. hope i can really catch up to speed with all the lectures really soon, especially my core module.

reality check.. finals are in less than 2 months. two of the modules that did not have any midterms require tons of reading and memorising. i ought to start soon.

work aside.. let's talk floorball. this weekend will be the start of the league competition for Division 4. really hope to start off on a positive note on Sunday as the team head into our first game. hope to have the strength to train and fight for more wins than draws or losses.

now, last thing i want to update is my senior application to the faculty of science orientation programs. good thing is i got into both camps.. SCAMP and SOW. woohoo.. really happy. nonetheless, the commitment is high but ohh wells.. i love to enjoy as much as i can in the first one and a half years in NUS. hopefully later in the year during the winter break, i am able to go for an OCIP.

social weapon

the weapon i am talking about is practically in our hands during most time of the day. well, not exactly literally but we are always a metre away from it. yes, the weapon i am talking about is your fancy smartphone.

like most real weapons, the smartphone can be a good or bad thing to really rely on all the time. yes, it is good in its built-in functions. we can work efficiently and communicate to one another in a matter of seconds. knowledge can be learnt and information can be shared readily using the smartphone. nonetheless, having a smartphone can be really damaging to you social relations.

social relations, you sure? yes, i am sure. while better means of communications can boost social ties, having it on actual social gatherings can be harmful. let me walk you through it..

how often someone in the group will be absorbed into his/her smartphone and stopped communicating to the people present around? how often a real conversation is disrupted by the sound from the smartphone or the sudden vibration of the smartphone? how often you meet someone who would check his/her smartphone say every 10 seconds? how often everyone suddenly fall into an awkward silence because of either of the three situations? well, that is not all. after that, the situation might snowball and suddenly you realised everyone, including yourself, has started to draw that social weapon out and use it.

simply put, i think we have come to a point where smartphone has become our social pillow in real social gatherings as well. whenever we are in an awkward situation, we use it. whenever we have nothing to say, we use it. whenever we are alone in public, say waiting for a friend or what not, we use it. what’s even more disturbing is not all the time we touch the smartphone is due to the fact that you have to reply a message or what not.

well, i won’t accuse anyone of being over reliant on it or what not. even i myself am guilty of using to avoid awkward situations now and then. i’m pretty sure i am not in the minority. so what’s the point of me saying all these? well, i hope me highlighting here can let you all know that these things exist. whether you are guilty or not of any of the things mentioned, let’s embrace it and take note what we are doing with our smartphones during a social gathering. personally, if i am out in a social gathering i would rather the people present to interact all the time and never to use their smartphones at any point of time. for that to happen, i know i myself should practise some self-control as well. so yeah, hope we are all on the same page on this.

the mentor

yes this is an update of my life.

happy Friday. happy Friday the 13th. happy end of elearning week. happy end of week 8. now you have slightly more than a month's time before you face the final exams of this semester.

well, my last day of "holiday" wasn't exactly much.. not much work done but at least i managed to meet up with my academic mentor earlier this afternoon for a nice chat. okay, for the benefit of others unsure of what is this.. well, basically NUS has each students attached to an academic mentor.. i'm guessing all of them are full-time teaching staffs and/or professors.

so i only started contacting him after more than one semester because i was faced with a recent dilemma. i wasn't sure if i should pick up a second major during my course of study and so i weigh all costs and benefits out. despite listing them out, i was still unsure and so i went to find him. in the end, he gave me more than just valuable feedback. he's a statistic professor if i did not remember wrongly. we talked about my options and my goals in studying here and what not. to top it off, he even asked me questions pertaining to a module i'm taking.. yikes. better revise my core modules before meeting him next time lol.. half the time i stoned.

haha okay.. in all seriousness, i'm glad we have each such academic tutor. at least you know there is someone way senior than you to give you valuable feedback and what not.

illogical workload

yes this is an update of my life.

so elearning week is coming to an end. hold your tongues if you are about to say "so good, got holidays". if you don't, you deserved to be smashed against the wall or try having elearning week in NUS. personally, while i like the idea of choosing what i want to study and revise whenever i like and not turn up during specific timeslots for classes, the amount of work they give us is insanely illogical.

5 days of weekdays make up a school week. however, if you were to sum up all the duration of online lectures and amount of time needed to do each assignment, you will realise that the amount of time required is way more than the amount of time we usually spend in classrooms and lectures. yeah, you may argue that outside of curriculum, one is expected to revise as well. yes, true, nonetheless even adding say 3 hours a day might not allow you finish all. this results to your play or chill time to be reduced by a significant amount of time.

yeah.. mixed feelings for elearning week but if one thing NS and first semester of university has taught me is at times.. just really suck it up and do. few more years to graduation.. i can do this.

secrets for you

for me, when it comes to friends and secrets, there are many categories. if you are my certain kind of friend, you deserve to know certain secrets only. okay, to begin with secrets are for my good and best friends only. i don’t entertain normal friends and acquaintances with my dear stories. yeah, call me old-fashioned or conservative or what-not but that’s how i roll.

secrets can be in form of many kinds.. love life, something you did to someone that you feel guilty about, family problems, emotional struggles. the list goes on and on. well, i believe you are smart enough to know what i mean. anyway, i’m sure you would keep secrets of your own as well and of course, you would not share them with anyone and everyone who knows you by your looks and your name.

well, if you are a friend who have heard of practically everything in the list listed above, you are probably what i see as a best friend who is dear to me. nonetheless, if you are a friend who have heard at least one of those, you are also a treasured friend. understand that secrets are secrets for a reason. not all secrets should be shared with all whom i treasure.

on top of that, for some noob friends out there that i might have, secrets mentioned to you do not give you the right to use it as a blackmail or what not. if you are guilty of doing so or something similar, shame on you. i’m not dumb. i hold the virtue of trust really seriously. of course in second chances as well. one time to many, i would know that i have trusted the wrong person.

2am

yes this is an update of my life.

nope this post wasn't started at 2am. the point of the title of this post will be known soon. sitting here and waiting for yet another big clash in the world of soccer. it is the FA Cup clash between Man Utd and Arsenal. how exciting is it going to be.. i hope i don't waste my time watching a goal-less match. of course, more goals have to come from Arsenal.

anyway, staying up late and feeling glad that there are friends who do so as well. chit chatting random stuff can be fun. i realise one thing about myself since years ago. anything said after 2am is utterly random and personal half the time. so if you want to know me really well.. come talk to me after midnight.. haha.

the amount of sleep i need will be great after watching the game. let's hope Arsenal wins and that i wake up by 1pm.. lol.

jump start

yes this is an update of my life.

two days of the weekend is coming to end before the start of elearning week. i always have this personal policy of mine that sort of make sure i will relax and chill after major tests or exams. Friday was the last midterm for the week and hence naturally i've chilling since then. however, i know i have to kick start the engine starting tomorrow.. no, jump start.

i have not much power in that engine already. i think every semester is similar. around this time of the semester, the pain and stress would have numb me. the energy and life will be slowly leaking out of my soul but i have no longer the energy to fix that efficiently. yeah.. throughout the remaining few weeks, i will just be looking towards the end.. not because i am ready to take on the remaining of the semester but because i want to just drop dead at the finishing line and rest.

ohh well, that's life in university i guess. can't complain much but just have to suck it up or at least try fixing and adapting accordingly. looking at the amount of work ahead this week, i can just wallow in despair and self-pity.. but no i'm better than that and i shall proof myself so. next challenge.. a midterm test on Monday.. on a module i don't really have good knowledge on.

i want high

yes this is an update of my life.

two evenings ago was one of the better evenings i have so far this year. managed to catch yet another concert by another of my idol.. Lindsey Stirling. her concert was held at the theatre in MBS. well, the experience was just brilliant. there was so much energy in her band and her performances. the acoustic pieces were really good as well. her speech to the audience was rather personal and heart-felt.

however, there was only one drawback. the venue is sort of the formal kind so audience wasn't able to really get high and stand up and cheer throughout the show and what not. personally, i would rather a place where the audience can have the freedom to do so. nonetheless, the entire concert was just amazing. money well spent.

ohh.. someone also made a proposal on stage too.. so cool. my first time seeing one right in front of my eyes.
